Copper Reed Studio were honored to be commissioned by St. Joseph’s Secondary School in Spanish Point to design and produce a celebratory book titled ‘Salty Faces and Ferocious Appetites’. From the project’s outset we had the privilege of working with Anne Jones, a past pupil of the school, whose enthusiasm for books can only be described as infectious. Anne had taken up the editorial challenge some time before she arrived at our studio for the first of many exploratory book project meetings. We were soon put in the picture to the extent of Anne’s ambition for this project. Her objectives were simple – excellence in the vital elements of book design, graphic reproduction, book production values and photography.

The books subtitled ‘A Tapestry of Stories from a Seaside School’ reveals the collaborative composition of this multi authored book. 38 stories from 40 former pupils and teachers of necessity informed the graphic shape of our final design plan – a plan which was fully embraced by Anne and her team at St. Joseph’s Secondary School.

Book contributors include: RTE’s Marty Morrissey, internationally renowned singer Maura O’Connell and award winning architect Shelly McNamara.

The final design, now printed and in all good bookstores, brought into harmony the disparate life stories of the many contributors united by a shared formative experience of education within St. Joseph’s Secondary School.

Step 1 Generate a Press Release
Press releases are the most effective way of creating market awareness about your product or service and also creating inbound links. A clever newsworthy press release should be created and issued to local and national media, trade publications AND internet media channels. www.prweb.com or www.prleap.com are good resources for issuing press releases to Google News, Yahoo News etc

Step 2 Online Advertising

Pay-per-click advertising, or a sponsored link, with Google or Yahoo is the only way to have your website appear instantly on the search engines. But the trouble with all advertising, print or online, is getting a return for your investment. We really only suggest pay-per-click advertising for e-commerce sites or customers with a product to sell as they have a higher chance of converting traffic to sales.

The most effective search engine optimisation tactic currently is blogging. This may change, as Google have been known to change their ranking algorithms, but for now it certainly is viewed very favourably with the engines. Once launched the blog needs to be submitted to blog directories. Consistent weekly posts, two to three on average, will result in inbound links and effective search engine rankings for your site. Metadata
Metadata tags tell the search engines what your web page is about. There are three sections to this process-

1. Title: Should be clear and concise telling people what the site will contain.
2. Description: This is a short summary containing the important information about the web page. It should ideally be between 150 – 200 characters long with important keywords and terms crafted into the description.
3. Keywords: Google once took these words into heavy consideration. They help traffic flow to particular sites. Today web pages are heavily diluted with these words making them less meaning full but they are still taken into consideration. We recommend around 10 important keywords be listed.

Heading Summary
Like the use of headings and sub-headings in newspapers, websites can use special tags in their HTML coding. These headings are useful in giving keywords prominence on the page. The first heading should give an overall description of the entire page as a whole, with the further headings providing additional information.

Images
Images are a great way of enhancing your web page. Its important to remember that search engine crawlers, or text-only web browsers, cannot see images. For an image to be noticed it must have a tag name (a hidden caption in a way) relevant to the picture.

Internal Page
it is also important to remember to optimise the text, images, title etc of the internal pages of your site as well as the homepage in order to improve your engine rankings and attract sustainable traffic.

The Mulkear LIFE project, a LIFE Natura 2000 project, involves the restoration of the lower Shannon SAC for Sea Lamprey, Atlantic Salmon and the European Otter. Project Partners Shannon Regional Fisheries Board (Project Sponsors & Overall Project Beneficiary), Office of Public Works (Associate Beneficiary) & Limerick County Council (Associate Beneficiary) identified that the Mulkear LIFE website would be of critical importance in supporting all educational and media work, and would be a key tool for their information dissemination work and public awareness work.
